Masks and Fetishes

I get to this point in Lent every year and realize how very long 40 days is! We would be half-way through Advent by now! But that is the point is it not? Waiting intentionally and actively. Waiting until it hurts or at least until new feelings are felt.

New feelings or old feelings felt newly is a Lenten phenomenon. It requires mining those feelings and facing them, knowing and accepting they are still there. A line in the poem, I Saw Him Standing, by Ann Griffiths caused me to grapple with some old feelings and attempt to feel them in a way which was life-giving instead of life-sapping.

“The earth is full of masks and fetishes,”...indeed!

We have our own and the world has its. Lent, especially smack dab in the middle, is a good time to address them, name them, relocate them, process them. Goodness knows "masks" has taken on new meaning this year! While we see in a glass dimly now, it might help us to someday see clearly if we identify the distractions and obstacles, not to mention pay attention to what is revealed when we do!
