What is Bequeathed To Us

We are immersed in the midst of the wisdom pattern, a divine pattern of all creation. We are in the midst at all times of creation, desecration and sanctification. Brueggemann documents this pattern in the psalms of organization, disorganization and reorganization. Rohr uses the phrase “wisdom pattern” to explain in various words this essential pattern of life. He uses order, disorder and reorder.

To say we are always in the midst of this pattern is not only to proclaim a wise saying but it is to accept our place in God’s time and space. It is to surrender to a higher power of formation and redemption than we can ever exercise on ourselves or others.

I am reminded of this pattern on a daily basis and use various symbols to locate my own spiritual and emotional balance on this roller coaster of creation and participation. The one item which continues to draw me in and give me hope and comfort is a cup in the Japanese kintsugi style. Its life is a testament to the wisdom pattern: it was made, it broke, it was made new and even more beautiful.

Many of us might try to take the gold filament used in this artistic form and apply it to the surface of an object, or ourselves. This misses the point and, in fact, is the very definition of superficial.

We are broken and cracked. God fills us, not just superficially, but in the deep crevices of our lives. God makes all things new and “good”. We then are remade, reorganized, reordered and most importantly, redeemed!
