river of souls

“When you do something from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy...” Rumi

Perhaps Rumi’s words help me understand one of the qualitative differences on the faces of many protesters. Perhaps they help me witness a river of movement, a social justice movement. The calm and steady resolve which seems to have descended on the people in the streets and even on many “enforcers” and “keepers of the peace” signals a new authenticity and communal spirit at work. When immersed in a river of concerted movement, only bobbing heads distinctive, souls have become one while moving toward a sea of change. This is our present sacrament, the outward and visible sign of the beloved community.
